Living in the present, we must look back at history. Aside from visiting museums, one of the most direct ways is to explore the tombs of emperors that have been made accessible to the public. Since 2010, I’ve been visiting these tombs — it’s been 15 years, and I’ve taken around 20,000 photos. From these, I’ve selected a few dozen to share here. The photos are arranged chronologically, following the timeline of China’s feudal dynasties. The goal is to offer a deeper, more visceral understanding of these buried pieces of history, which have lain underground for hundreds or even thousands of years. In 2023, I used a 3D scanning app on the iPad Pro to digitally capture some of these ancient imperial and aristocratic tombs from China’s feudal era.
